The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board is seeking public input on proposed changes to hunting regulations for white-tailed deer, moose, and turkey. These changes, recommended by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, are aimed at balancing the deer herd with available habitat in specific areas of the state. The proposed changes include allowing hunters to harvest more antlerless deer, expanding the archery season, and implementing special additional archery zones in areas with high deer populations.
The proposed changes are in response to the need to manage deer numbers to ensure sustainability for habitats as forests age, winters become warmer, and land use patterns evolve. The proposed regulations also include changes to moose and turkey hunting seasons, as well as rules for transporting wild game meat. Public comment on these proposals will be accepted until May 25, 2025, via email or at public hearings scheduled throughout the state.
If approved, the new deer and turkey hunting regulations and game meat transport rules will take effect in 2026, while the new moose hunting regulations would be implemented between fall 2025 and 2026. The full list of proposed changes can be found on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department website. The department emphasizes the importance of hunters in helping to manage deer populations and maintain the ecological balance in Vermont’s forests.
