Source: Ukraine and the United States near finalization of mineral agreement

Negotiations between the United States and Ukraine regarding access to Ukraine’s critical and rare-earth minerals are reportedly close to reaching a deal, with both sides making concessions. The U.S. has not been given the $500 billion in potential revenue it desired from Kyiv’s deposits, while Ukraine has not received the security guarantees it urgently wants to help defeat Russian forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office did not confirm the news but indicated a press conference would be held to address the matter. The potential agreement comes after a strained week of relations between the two countries, sparked by comments from President Donald Trump suggesting using Ukraine’s mineral wealth to pay back the U.S. for military aid. Trump confirmed Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington on Friday, despite their previous disagreements. The agreement would involve American military support, in addition to access to critical and rare earth elements in Ukraine. Russia also proposed a deal where the U.S. would gain ownership of minerals and metals in parts of Ukraine controlled by the Russian military. The negotiations are seen as an attempt to incentivize continued support from the U.S. for Ukraine with military aid. A peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is said to be 30-60 days away, although the details of how this will be achieved remain unclear.
