In a rare move, Rep. Laura Sibilia, I-Dover, is seeking campaign cash to challenge House Speaker Jill Krowinski, D-Burlington, for the top leadership position in the Vermont House. Sibilia needs to raise $8,000 for her campaign efforts, including funding for a staffer. The House Democratic caucus is set to vote on its nominee for speaker in December, with Krowinski being the only challenger from within the party so far.
While candidates for the speaker position typically campaign privately and within party caucuses, Sibilia has taken the unconventional approach of fundraising publicly. Donors are directed to contribute to her existing House campaign account, subject to campaign finance laws limiting contributions to $1,120 per donor. The funds raised will be used to build a staff and prepare for the legislative session if Sibilia is elected.
Sibilia emphasized the need for financial support to carry out the necessary work ahead of the speaker election, including meetings with House members and stakeholders. She has appointed former Democratic state Rep. Lucy Rogers as her chief of staff and stated that additional funds could be used for staffing needs depending on the level of donations received. Sibilia’s campaign is urging supporters to donate symbolically to reach the target of 76 votes needed to win.
