Ripton School has a deadline: 7 families must enroll in the next few weeks.

Molly Witters, a parent at Ripton Elementary School, is leading efforts to keep the tiny K-5 school open by recruiting students for the next school year. With just three students projected for the combined kindergarten and first grade class, well below the district’s minimum requirement, the school is at risk of closure. To address this, the Addison County School District Board passed a policy allowing students from across the district to volunteer to join the class at Ripton.

Witters and other parents are on a mission to find seven kindergarteners or first graders who will help keep the class at Ripton. They are posting flyers and reaching out to families throughout the district, hoping to attract parents who value the small school experience. The policy allows students to be bussed to Ripton, but the transportation factor remains a concern for some families.

The community is rallying to save the school, with parents strategizing and spreading the word about the enrollment opportunity. The fate of Ripton Elementary School hangs in the balance as families have until March 3 to express their interest in joining the school. For students like fifth-grader Tenlyn Wetzel, the school closure conversation has been a looming concern, but she and her classmates cherish the close-knit community at Ripton and hope to keep it open for future students.
