Fairmont High School graduate and U.S. Border Patrol Agent, David “Chris” Maland, was killed in the line of duty near the Canadian border in Vermont. The tragic incident occurred during a traffic stop where gunfire was exchanged, resulting in Maland and another subject being fatally shot, with a third person injured and now in custody. Maland’s death was confirmed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security. Records show that Maland is the first agent killed in the line of duty since 2014. Born in Blue Earth, Maland went by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father, also named David. He served nine years in the military and 15 in the Federal Government, working in security at the Pentagon during 9/11 and as a K9 handler and member of the Mobile Rescue Team. Maland is survived by his fiancé, Rosanne, who described him as her soulmate and best friend. The Associated Press provided additional details for this report.
