More than a dozen sea lions have been reported sick in Southern California, with the cause suspected to be domoic acid toxicity from toxic algal blooms. The California Wildlife Center has responded to numerous calls of distressed sea lions, warning beachgoers in Malibu to avoid interacting with the animals. Domoic acid can damage the brains and hearts of marine animals, causing seizures and lethargy. Residents are urged to keep their distance from animals at the beach and report any distressed animals to the center’s marine team. Concerns over the health of the Malibu shores have arisen following January’s wildfires and heavy rains this month, which triggered mudslides and flooding in burn-scarred areas. An ocean water advisory is in place for a large stretch of the Los Angeles County coastline due to the Palisades Fire, and beach visitors are advised to stay away from fire debris and out of the ocean.
