Billionaire Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to federal employees, demanding they justify their work or resign. Musk made the announcement on his social media platform X, stating that employees must respond to an email summarizing what they accomplished that week or face forced resignation. The email, sent from the Office of Personnel Management, requested a summary of work completed that week in five bullet points and required a response by Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
The Trump administration, in line with Musk’s directive, is seeking to create a more efficient and accountable federal workforce. However, not all officials are on the same page, as FBI Director Kash Patel instructed employees to pause response to the email and review the work internally.
The American Federation of Government Employees condemned Musk and the Trump administration for the ultimatum, promising to challenge any unlawful terminations of its members. A chapter representing National Treasury Employees Union members advised members not to respond, stating that the directive from OPM does not create an obligation for employees to comply.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is seeking to make significant cuts to the federal workforce, including mass layoffs and disbanding agencies such as USAID. As of November 2024, over 3 million people were employed by the federal government. While Musk and the Trump administration aim for a more accountable and efficient federal workforce, the ultimatum has been met with resistance and questions about its legality and practicality.
