Two police officers, Christopher Reese, 30, and Cameron Girvin, 25, were shot and killed during a traffic stop in Virginia Beach by the suspect, John McCoy, 42, who was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The officers were attempting to pull over a car with expired plates when McCoy became argumentative and shot them during a struggle. McCoy then shot the officers again before driving off. Both officers were pronounced dead at nearby hospitals. In a press conference, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed sorrow for the loss of the young officers and confirmed that McCoy’s cause of death appeared to be self-inflicted. Neudigate was joined by Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer in mourning the tragedy.
