The bodies of young Hamas hostages identified among those returned to Israel

Hamas has released the bodies of four Israeli hostages, including members of the Bibas family who were captured in a terrorist attack in 2023. The bodies are believed to be Kfir and Ariel Bibas, along with their mother Shiri Bibas and another captive named Oded Lifshitz. The bodies are being transferred to Israeli authorities for forensic testing to confirm their identities.

Yarden Bibas, the father of the boys and husband of Shiri, was released earlier under a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. The body of Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir Bibas were announced to be among those returned by Hamas this week, along with the release of six living captives this Saturday.

The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas includes the return of hostages, with 19 already having been released. Negotiations for the second phase of the deal, focusing on the release of the remaining 64 hostages and post-war Gaza administration, are underway.

The situation has been tense, with threats of derailment due to violations from both sides. Despite this, the ceasefire deal has mostly remained on track with the help of mediators. A high-level Israeli delegation is set to travel to Qatar to initiate talks on the second phase of the deal.

Overall, around 1,200 people were killed in the initial attack, with more than 48,000 Palestinians killed in the ensuing military offensive. The return of hostages and prisoners is a significant step towards peace between the two sides.
