Over the past three days, attacks by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have resulted in the deaths of over 200 people in White Nile state, according to activists. The RSF, a paramilitary group, has been engaged in a conflict with Sudan’s army for nearly two years and controls large parts of the west of Sudan and areas of Khartoum. However, they have been losing ground in central Sudan to the army, with White Nile state emerging as a key battleground.
The attacks in White Nile state have been described as intentional acts of genocide by activists, with villagers being shot at and drowned while trying to flee across the Nile. The United States has accused the RSF of committing genocide in areas under its control, contributing to what the U.N. has deemed the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
The RSF’s delayed signing of a political charter in Nairobi, which could pave the way for a breakaway government in the territories they control, has been postponed to allow for a fuller representation from rebel leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu’s SPLM-N. Al-Hilu’s group controls significant territory in South Kordofan and has not previously taken a firm position in the conflict between the RSF and the army.
The government in Sudan has accused external powers, such as the United Arab Emirates, of supporting the RSF. The RSF’s alliance with marginalized groups against the central power represented by the army could potentially expand their territory and influence. However, the government maintains that the population in areas controlled by the RSF opposes the militia’s agenda and the idea of a “New Sudan.”
