GOP Skeptical of Trump’s Labor Secretary Nominee Ahead of Confirmation Hearing

The Republican-led Senate committee is holding a confirmation hearing for President Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who is a former congresswoman from Oregon. She has received support from the Teamsters Union for her experience in fighting for American workers and businesses. Chavez-DeRemer previously co-sponsored the PRO Act in the House, which aimed to promote unions’ ability to organize, alter independent contractor classifications, and weaken right-to-work laws. During her opening statement, she addressed her support for the PRO Act but stated that she now fully supports states’ rights to protect their right to work. Chavez-DeRemer faced questioning from senators about her past support for the PRO Act and her stance on issues such as labor violation investigations and Planned Parenthood. Some Senate Republicans, like Sen. Rand Paul, have expressed opposition to her nomination, citing her support for the PRO Act which they strongly oppose. However, Senate Democrats are keeping their opinions on her nomination to themselves for now. Senate Republican leaders have not indicated whether Chavez-DeRemer will receive a floor vote if she fails in committee. Chavez-DeRemer has emphasized that she will implement President Trump’s policies and serve at his pleasure if confirmed.
