Vatican announces Pope Francis to stay hospitalized due to ‘complicated’ respiratory infection

Pope Francis, 88 years old, has been diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract and is receiving treatment in a hospital in Rome. The infection was discovered during testing conducted over the past few days following his admission for bronchitis treatment. His condition is considered stable, and he will need to remain in the hospital for further therapy. Polymicrobial diseases are caused by a combination of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

The Pope had a quiet first night in the hospital, spending his time eating, reading newspapers, praying, and resting. He has had a history of health issues, including a pulmonary infection as a young man which required partial lung removal, influenza, diverticulitis surgery in 2021, and hernia repair in 2023. Despite his health challenges, he remains optimistic and recently published an autobiography titled “HOPE” where he stated that he is old but well. He often uses a wheelchair due to knee and back pain but emphasizes that the Church is governed by the head and heart, not by physical strength. The Vatican has canceled his scheduled audiences, and he will continue with therapies during his hospital stay.
