Daniel Sikkema, a New York man, has been indicted for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his estranged husband, wealthy art dealer Brent Sikkema, who was found brutally stabbed in Brazil last year. Daniel has been charged with murder-for-hire resulting in death, murder-for-hire conspiracy resulting in death, conspiracy to murder and maim a person in a foreign country, and passport fraud. Daniel and Brent were going through a contentious divorce at the time of the murder. Allegedly, Daniel made concealed payments to the hitman to hide his involvement in the murder plan. The hitman, identified as Alejandro Triana Trevez, snuck into Brent’s Rio de Janeiro townhouse and stabbed him multiple times on January 14, 2024. Daniel then arranged for a payment of $5,000 to be made to the hitman and promised more payments later. Triana Trevez was arrested by Brazilian law enforcement for his involvement in the murder. Daniel has been arrested and pleaded not guilty to the charges, facing a mandatory penalty of life in prison or death if convicted. Brent Sikkema was the co-owner of a prominent art gallery in Manhattan, which was initially founded in 1991 by Brent as Wooster Gardens before moving to Chelsea in 1999. U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon stated that justice will be pursued against those who murder U.S. citizens, both at home and abroad.
