Approximately 75,000 federal employees have accepted the White House’s “deferred resignation” offer, allowing them to resign but still receive pay through September. This offer was closed on Wednesday after a federal judge ruled to end a temporary pause to the program. The number of employees who accepted the offer is less than 5% of the federal workforce, lower than the administration’s expectation of 5-10%. The attrition rate of the federal workforce in fiscal year 2023 was 5.9%, according to the Partnership for Public Service. U.S. District Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. allowed the resignation offer to proceed after initially halting it, stating that the unions did not have legal standing to bring the case. The Office of Personnel Management welcomed the court’s decision and stated that the Deferred Resignation Program was legal and beneficial for federal employees. As of 7:00 PM on Wednesday, the program is officially closed.
