Paul Suk-Hyun Yoon, the Chief Diversity Officer at Vermont State University, has over 18 years of experience in education. He recently served as the senior advisor for inclusive excellence at the University of Vermont. Yoon, who resides in Essex with his family, shared his thoughts on recent executive orders affecting diversity and education.
Yoon expressed disappointment and confusion about the statement that there are only two genders and the elimination of DEI workers on a federal level. He highlighted the human impact of these decisions on individuals and institutions. The freeze on federal assistance for schooling also raised concerns about potential job loss for many.
As an Asian-American, Yoon shared fears of increased anti-Asian rhetoric after the new administration took over. He emphasized the importance of unconditional love and empathy in his life and expressed gratitude for those who have supported him along the way.
Yoon stressed the need to address racism and other “isms” at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic levels. Despite his dedication to his work, Yoon enjoys running and participating in triathlons. He also shared his love for jazz music, lo-fi music, and pop music.
Reflecting on a past regret of not accepting a commission as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, Yoon acknowledged the sacrifice and hard work of service members. Through his work and personal experiences, Yoon continues to advocate for justice and inclusivity in education and society.
