The Center for Community News at the University of Vermont has named its third annual cohort of CCN Faculty Champions, honoring 38 individuals from colleges and universities across the U.S. who are leading local news reporting programs. These partnerships are seen as vital for addressing the crisis facing local news and providing critical information to communities.
The faculty champions represent 24 different states and 13 Minority Serving Institutions, with many proposing partnerships with public media outlets and local radio stations. They are leading efforts in democracy and elections coverage, bilingual reporting programs, and engaging students in journalism and beyond.
This year’s honorees include individuals such as Aaron Hanlon from Colby College, who has a background in English and philosophy and has published extensively in popular press outlets. Alan Miller from Denison University brings extensive experience from his role as an executive editor at The Columbus Dispatch and is involved in nonprofit news organizations.
Other honorees are leading programs at institutions like Virginia Commonwealth University, Kent State University, and Southern Methodist University. They focus on community journalism, media innovation, and enhancing student experiences through real-world reporting opportunities.
The CCN Faculty Champions are making significant contributions to the future of local news and journalism education, helping to ensure a sustainable and informed future for communities across the country. Their work highlights the importance of news-academic partnerships in addressing the evolving challenges facing the media industry.
