John Rodgers, a Republican from Glover, Vermont, has officially been elected as the state’s next lieutenant governor. In a joint vote by the House and Senate, Rodgers secured a 158-18 victory over Progressive/Democrat David Zuckerman. While Rodgers had won more votes than Zuckerman in the November election, neither candidate had received a majority of the total votes, leading to the legislative decision. This election marks the first time in 14 years that both the governor and lieutenant governor of Vermont will be from the same party.
The voting process took place with Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Baruth presiding, and members of both chambers casting their ballots in a joint assembly. Rodgers, who was present with his family, received applause and congratulations from legislators after his win was announced. Despite some initial uncertainty, it was expected that lawmakers would affirm Rodgers’ victory.
In addition to Rodgers, the election of five other statewide officials, including Governor Phil Scott, Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas, State Treasurer Mike Pieciak, State Attorney General Charity Clark, and State Auditor Doug Hoffer, was also certified during the legislative session. Overall, the election process concluded smoothly with Rodgers now ready to assume his responsibilities as lieutenant governor and work for the people of Vermont.
