All 10 individuals aboard a small plane that went missing in Alaska have been confirmed dead after the wreckage was discovered crashed. The passengers included nine individuals and one pilot who were traveling from Unalakleet to Nome when the plane disappeared. The victims were identified as pilot Chad Antill, as well as Liane Ryan, Donnell Erickson, Andrew Gonzalez, Kameron Hartvigson, Rhone Baumgartner, Jadee Moncur, Ian Hofmann, Talaluk Katchatag, and Carol Mooers. Recovery efforts prioritized retrieving the victims and then the wreckage with the National Transportation Safety Board investigating the crash.
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium confirmed that two of their employees were among the deceased, who had traveled to service a heat recovery system in Unalakleet. The crash was believed to have occurred due to a rapid loss in elevation and speed as indicated by radar analysis. The wreckage was found 34 miles southeast of Nome, where the bodies were recovered from the forward part of the aircraft.
Transportation in the area is primarily done by air or water due to the lack of a highway system connecting Nome and Unalakleet. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed their condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragedy. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department, Alaska National Guard, and other agencies responded to the recovery efforts in challenging conditions. The close-knit Alaskan community came together to grieve and support those impacted by the incident.
