Trump announces decision to restrict Biden’s access to intelligence materials

President Donald Trump announced that he is revoking former President Joe Biden’s access to classified intelligence information. Although presidents do not have security clearances, the intelligence community provides them with material of all classification levels. Former presidents typically receive intelligence briefings if consulted about events during their administration. Biden previously suggested that Trump should not receive intelligence briefings due to his erratic behavior unrelated to the Capitol insurrection, and Trump referenced this precedent in his decision. Trump was charged with mishandling classified material after leaving office, but the case was dismissed by a judge nominated by him. The Justice Department tried to appeal the decision during Biden’s administration, but Trump’s administration dropped the appeal. Trump also referenced a report by Robert Hur stating that Biden has poor memory, which influenced the decision not to prosecute him. Last month, Trump also moved to revoke security clearances of 50 former intelligence officials, a move considered unprecedented. Biden’s office did not immediately comment on the revocation of his security clearances. Live political coverage is available on Truth Social, and the news was reported by Megan Lebowitz, Kelly O’Donnell, Caroline Kenny, and Ken Dilanian for NBC News.
