A federal judge has temporarily blocked political appointees and special government employees, including those from the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, from accessing sensitive and confidential information stored within the Treasury Department. This decision came after 19 state attorneys general sued the federal government, alleging that Elon Musk and his DOGE staffers had no authority to access Treasury Department data, including Americans’ social security numbers and other financial information. The judge’s order prohibits access to Treasury Department payment records, systems, and data containing personally identifiable or confidential financial information, and requires anyone who previously accessed this data since Trump took office to destroy any copies. A hearing on the case is set for February 14, with no immediate response from the White House or Department of Justice. Another lawsuit in Washington by union members and retirees also raised concerns about DOGE staff accessing Treasury Department data, leading to the Trump administration agreeing to limit access to only two staffers. One of the staffers, Marko Elez, resigned from DOGE after his connection to a racist social media account was revealed. Despite Vice President JD Vance defending Elez and Musk promising to reinstate him, the controversy continues.
