In Malawi, clinics are facing a critical shortage of HIV medication due to the Trump administration’s freeze on U.S. foreign aid. The U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols issued a temporary restraining order pausing a deadline for USAID to drastically reduce its workforce, which was expected to leave only a few hundred employees. This move has already led to interruptions in lifesaving care, particularly in maternal and child health, HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, which impact women and girls at disproportionate rates.
Critics argue that USAID is a wasteful organization, but advocates say it is a critical lifeline providing essential resources for issues such as childbirth, malaria prevention, education, and gender-based violence.
