Joan Shannon announces decision not to run for reelection to Burlington City Council, concluding a successful career in local politics

After serving for two decades on the Burlington City Council, Democrat Joan Shannon announced that she will not be running for reelection. Shannon, who has represented the city’s South End since 2003, expressed gratitude for her time on the council and engagement with constituents in a press release. Known as a “steadfast voice of reason,” Shannon played a crucial role in resolving the Burlington Telecom crisis in 2009 and spearheaded a city policy banning smoking in bars and clubs.

Shannon made an unsuccessful bid for mayor last spring, focusing her campaign on public safety issues. She will finish out the remaining three months of her term before stepping down. The Burlington Democratic Party will nominate two candidates to vie for the South District seat, including Romeo Von Hermann and Buddy Singh. The party will hold a caucus on Jan. 5 to determine the Democratic nominees for city council.

The Vermont Progressive Party will put forward Jennifer Monroe Zakaras as their candidate for the South District seat, emphasizing the need for new leadership in the city. Executive Director Josh Wronski expressed confidence in Zakaras as a strong contender for the district. Shannon’s decision not to seek reelection marks the end of a long career in Queen City politics, with a focus on addressing critical issues such as affordable housing, the drug crisis, and improving the city’s police department.
