Brandon Russell, the founder of a neo-Nazi group, was convicted of conspiring with his ex-girlfriend, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, to plan sniper attacks on electrical substations around Baltimore. Their goal was to create chaos in the majority-Black city and incite a race war. However, they were arrested before carrying out their plans. Russell was found guilty of conspiracy to damage an energy facility and will be sentenced at a later date.
Russell had a previous run-in with the law for possession of explosive materials related to his involvement with the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of Russell’s involvement in the attack plot, including recorded phone calls and testimony from a confidential informant.
While the defense argued that Russell was merely a cheerleader for the plot and did not actively participate, the jury found him guilty. Russell’s previous legal issues, involving explosive materials and neo-Nazi paraphernalia, as well as his relationship with Clendaniel, were also detailed during the trial.
Clendaniel, who had a long history of white supremacist beliefs, had already pleaded guilty to plotting the attack and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Russell’s sentencing will take place at a later date, where he faces potential consequences for his involvement in the conspiracy to damage an energy facility in furtherance of racist beliefs.
