Middlebury, Vermont, is set to welcome a new neighborhood known as Stonecrop Meadows, a development that will feature over 250 homes available for sale and rent at various price points. This project, spearheaded by Summit Properties, is one of the largest new developments in the area and aims to provide much-needed housing options in rural Vermont.
The initiative was kickstarted by Middlebury College, which identified a workforce housing problem and collaborated with Summit to bring the project to fruition. Government support in the form of a legislative tweak to Act 250, as well as funding from federal, state, and local sources, has helped make the project possible. Gov. Phil Scott has expressed support for infrastructure financing programs to facilitate similar developments in rural communities.
Stonecrop Meadows will offer a mix of affordable housing options, including homes available through various subsidy programs to accommodate different income levels. The development’s first phase will include duplexes and townhomes, with plans for future apartment buildings and additional homes pending financing and permitting.
Officials and community members have praised Stonecrop Meadows as a collaborative effort that addresses Vermont’s housing shortage. The project reflects how partnerships between employers, local governments, and developers can make a significant impact on housing availability in the state. With the need for over 1,300 additional homes in Addison County by the end of the decade, projects like Stonecrop Meadows are crucial in meeting this demand.
