All American Selections, a nonprofit group established in 1932, continues to evaluate and select top-performing flower, herb, and vegetable varieties for home gardeners. This year, some of the top winners include compact plants ideal for small spaces like raised beds, balconies, and decks.
One notable selection is the “Black Forest Ruby” dahlia, which grows to just 2 feet tall with ruby red flowers and dark jet black foliage. Another standout is the “Mango Tango” marigold, a bicolored variety that stays compact at 10 inches tall and blooms all season long.
For those looking for a petite petunia, the “Shake Raspberry” variety is a great option, growing just 8 inches tall and branching out the same distance. And the award-winning nasturtium “The Baby Series” offers red, gold, and yellow blooms with compact mounding growth perfect for containers.
In addition to plant selections, houseplant enthusiasts may benefit from plant identification and care apps like Picture This and Planta. These apps can help identify plant illnesses, set care reminders, and provide diagnostic tools for plant problems.
