Two Russian figure skating coaches, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were also former Olympians, tragically lost their lives in a plane crash involving an American Airlines commercial airliner and a Blackhawk Army Helicopter. The couple, who were two-time world champions in pairs skating, had ties to Lake Placid, NY. Their son, Maxim Naumov, who is also a skater, was not on the flight.
Shishkova and Naumov had a successful skating career, winning a world championship title in 1994, and had moved to the U.S. to coach young skaters in New England. After their son competed in the U.S. national championships, the couple stayed in Wichita for a development camp for promising young skaters.
The Kremlin confirmed the couple’s presence on the flight, and the Skating Club of Boston, where they coached, also confirmed their deaths. An Instagram post from Maxim Naumov showed the family visiting Lake Placid in 2019, indicating their connection to the area.
The Skating Club of Lake Placid expressed condolences for the tragic crash, offering thoughts and prayers to the skating community affected by the events. NBC5 is investigating the family’s ties to Lake Placid to uncover more details about their relationship with the region. The loss of Shishkova and Naumov has deeply affected the skating community, and they will be remembered for their contributions to the sport.
