In Loving Memory: Thomas P. Salmon (1932-2025) – The Vermont Journal & The Shopper

Thomas P. Salmon, a beloved Democratic politician and former governor of Vermont, passed away at the age of 92. Known for his commitment to bipartisanship and civil discourse, Mr. Salmon left a lasting impact on the Green Mountain State through his six-decade career in public service.

Mr. Salmon’s political journey began in 1972 when he won the governorship of Vermont in what he called “the biggest political upset in Vermont history.” During his two terms as governor, he implemented groundbreaking reforms, including a property tax relief program that benefitted low-income and elderly residents.

After his time as governor, Mr. Salmon continued his work shaping Vermont’s future by serving as president of the University of Vermont and chairing the board of Green Mountain Power. Throughout his life, he maintained his legal career and established lasting friendships that provided support and camaraderie.

A proud Irish American, Mr. Salmon was known for his appreciation of literature, storytelling, Irish music, and sports. He was a loyal supporter of the Patriots, Red Sox, and Bruins and attended over 20 Super Bowls.

Mr. Salmon’s legacy will be remembered as a leader who brought people together, championed education, and dedicated his life to the betterment of Vermont and its people. Funeral services will be held at a later date, and arrangements are being handled by the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, Vt.
