The State of Vermont Dam Safety Program is collaborating with the US Army Corps of Engineers, New England Division on the Waterbury Dam Spillway Project in Waterbury, Vermont. This major project aims to improve flood gates operability and repair degraded concrete at the dam to restore full flood protection functionality. The project, backed by federal and state funding, will not only enhance the dam’s operation and public safety but also support recreation and water quality in the area.
DEC Commissioner Jason Batchelder emphasized the importance of the project in reducing flood risks in downstream communities and collaborating with federal partners. The project team has completed preliminary engineering analyses and assessment, with engineering design set to begin in spring 2025 and construction targeted for 2027.
As part of the project planning, the USACE NAE has issued a public notice and draft Environmental Assessment to evaluate potential environmental and cultural impacts of the construction process. The assessment also includes information on the temporary reservoir drawdown that will accompany the spillway reconstruction.
