Vermont made history on Monday night by securing its first team sport national championship at the 2024 Men’s College Cup. Maximilian Kissell’s game-winning goal in extra time lifted the Catamounts to a 2-1 victory over Marshall at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Kissell, a junior from Germany, scored his sixth game-winner of the season and 11th goal overall to seal the championship for Vermont.
The Catamounts’ victory was a testament to their perseverance throughout the season, with 16 goals scored in the 83rd minute or later. Kissell’s heroics in the postseason, including a crucial goal in the America East final, propelled Vermont to its historic win. Marcell Papp also scored a key goal to tie the match with 10 minutes remaining in the second half.
Vermont’s stellar defensive performance throughout the tournament, allowing only three goals, culminated in their national championship victory. The Catamounts defeated top-seeded Ohio State in the semifinals and held off a resilient Marshall team in the title game. This triumph marks the first national championship for Vermont’s soccer program and the first time an America East team has reached a team sport championship game.
The Catamounts’ achievement adds to the university’s impressive sporting history, which includes six championships in skiing. Kissell and his teammates overcame doubt and adversity to claim the championship, showcasing Vermont’s resilient spirit and determination.
