Vermont Catamounts made history by clinching their first-ever national title after defeating #13 Marshall 2-1 in the 2024 NCAA Championship Game. Maximilian Kissel scored the game-winning goal just 4:53 into the first overtime period, propelling the Catamounts to victory. The match saw a close battle with Marshall scoring first in the 67th minute, only for Vermont to equalize in the 81st minute with a goal from Marcell Papp. Kissel then secured the win in the 95th minute with his left-footed shot.
Key players in the game included Papp, who scored his fifth goal of the season, and Kissel, who notched his 11th goal and the biggest goal in Vermont men’s soccer history. David Ismail registered his first assist of the NCAA Tournament, while Yaniv Bazini had a game-high four shot attempts. Vermont’s journey to the championship included victories over #7 Hofstra, #2 Pittsburgh, #3 Denver, and #13 Marshall.
The Catamounts showed resilience throughout the season, bouncing back from being down by one goal in the final two College Cup matches. They finished the season undefeated when playing at home or on neutral turf, ending with a 10-game unbeaten streak. This victory marks a significant milestone not only for the Vermont program but also for the America East conference, as the Catamounts became the first team in league history to win a National Championship.
