Former daytime talk-show host Phil McGraw posted a video of himself on a ride-along with immigration agents in Chicago, showcasing enforcement operations that target “known criminals and terrorists.” The video, aired on his network Merit Street Media, featured Trump administration border czar Thomas Homan dispelling the idea that immigration authorities conduct racial sweeps. The increased enforcement efforts come after President Donald Trump vowed to carry out the largest mass deportation plan in U.S. history.
These actions have prompted concerns from immigration advocates regarding the rights of individuals during encounters with authorities, regardless of their immigration status. A group of Quaker congregations has even sued the Department of Homeland Security over the reversal of a policy that prohibited raids in sensitive locations without prior approval.
During the ride-along, nearly 1,200 people were taken into custody, with almost half having no criminal records. The video showed McGraw questioning a handcuffed man identified as undocumented and convicted of sex crimes with children, although the man claimed innocence.
It is noted that McGraw, who ended his daytime show in 2023, spoke at Trump’s rally and denies endorsing him. Trump’s rise to fame through reality TV and celebrity culture is also discussed, with various hosts comparing his use of media to their own careers. The former president effectively utilized modern formats during his 2024 campaign to engage with audiences.
