California utility reports increase in current on power line during Eaton Fire

High-voltage power lines experienced a surge in electrical current near the area where the Eaton Fire started following a “fault” on a line elsewhere in the transmission network, according to Southern California Edison. Although the fault occurred miles away and did not traverse Eaton Canyon, it was detected before the fire was reported, causing an increase in current on transmission lines. The cause of the fire, which spread through Altadena and Pasadena, remains under investigation.

Southern California Edison is facing negligence and wrongful death lawsuits, with residents capturing videos of flames near one of the utility’s electrical towers during hurricane-force winds. Despite de-energizing power distribution lines in the area before the fire, transmission lines in Eaton Canyon remained active due to their stronger design.

New footage from a gas station surveillance camera shows sparking from a transmission tower in Eaton Canyon moments before the fire began, prompting further investigation by the utility. Requests have been made to lower transmission lines for inspection, but this is challenging due to terrain.

The utility stated it is preserving materials for lawsuits and working to restore power to affected homes. A judge ordered materials to be preserved after a resident accused the utility of planning to discard evidence. At least 29 people have died in multiple wildfires in the Los Angeles area this month, with the Eaton Fire 99% contained as of Tuesday. Southern California Edison is reviewing complaints and has expressed commitment to supporting affected communities.
