Press Release: Vermont Officials Promote Anti-Idling Practices to Save Fuel and Reduce Emissions

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – As winter sets in, many residents warm up their vehicles to clear ice on frosty mornings. However, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is urging drivers to reconsider this habit in favor of more eco-friendly practices. Using a scraper instead of idling can significantly lower fuel bills and minimize environmental impact.

According to the department, if every gas or diesel vehicle in Vermont reduced idle time by just one minute each day throughout the year, the collective savings would be immense. Vermonters could conserve over a million gallons of fuel—equivalent to $3.8 million—and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 metric tons.

State legislation already restricts idling for more than five minutes within any 60-minute timeframe. Experts recommend instead that drivers warm up their vehicles by gently driving away shortly after starting the engine, while limiting idling time to no more than 30 seconds.

This initiative aligns with broader environmental efforts to combat climate change, emphasizing even small changes in daily habits can lead to substantial benefits for both personal finances and the planet’s health. With the colder months approaching, Vermonters are encouraged to adopt these practices and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is committed to educating the public on the advantages of reducing unnecessary idling, reinforcing that every minute counts in saving energy and protecting the environment.
