Catamounts Prepare for Weekend Clash Against Union

The Vermont Catamounts (4-8-3, 3-4-2 HEA) are gearing up for a weekend of non-conference hockey as they head to Schenectady, NY, to face the Union Garnet Chargers (9-5-1, 3-3-0 ECACH). The teams will clash at Messa Rink, with the first game scheduled for Friday, December 13 at 7 PM, followed by a Saturday matchup at 4 PM. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and WVMT.

Vermont is seeing impressive contributions from its first-year players, with Max Strand leading the team with 12 points, followed closely by Colin Kessler with 10 points. In total, newcomers have accounted for nearly 30% of the Catamounts’ scoring thus far. The team has also excelled on special teams, boasting an 87% penalty kill, ranking fourth in Hockey East and 13th nationally. Additionally, they have scored nine power-play goals over the last ten games and recently notched their first shorthanded goal of the season.

Sophomore goaltender Axel Mangbo has been a standout performer, recording two shutouts in league play and earning accolades for his defensive prowess. Vermont is riding the momentum from a high-scoring series against LIU, where they scored nine goals over two games, including a 7-4 victory last Saturday—marking their first seven-goal game since the 2016-17 season.

Union, currently holding a strong offensive rank nationally, is looking to bounce back following back-to-back losses last weekend. Their top players include first-year Ben Muthersbaugh, who leads the team in scoring. Historically, Vermont holds a slight edge in their series against Union, with a 20-14-2 record.
