Vermont’s Population Surges by 7,500 in 2023: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont experienced significant population growth in 2023, welcoming over 7,500 new residents, according to a recent analysis from the Vermont State Treasurer’s Office. Treasurer Mike Pieciak reported that the state saw a net increase of 7,592 people from out of state, marking the highest per capita net migration in New England and the third highest in the United States.

This influx is nearly double that of 2022 but represents a decrease from the pandemic-driven migration in 2021. The rise is attributed to individuals seeking a more outdoor-oriented lifestyle and the flexibility of remote work. Pieciak emphasized the importance of this growth given Vermont’s aging population and dwindling workforce, stating that new residents can help alleviate the financial burden of public education and stimulate economic growth.

However, the new population also presents challenges, particularly in the housing market. Pieciak cautioned that the increasing demand can strain an already tight housing supply, resulting in higher costs. "We need to lower costs, attract young people and families, and create new opportunities for Vermonters by investing in housing," he asserted.

The majority of newcomers hailed from northeastern states, with nearly one-third arriving from Massachusetts. Other significant sources of migration included Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. Conversely, many residents exiting Vermont relocated to states like Illinois, Utah, Tennessee, New York, and North Carolina.
