Vermont GOP’s Regulations Prevent Promotion of Candidates with Felony Convictions

[ad_1]
The Vermont Republican Party is facing a dilemma as their party rules prohibit supporting a candidate with a felony conviction, while their presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has recently been convicted on 34 felony counts. The party’s rules state that they will not support or promote any candidate who is a convicted felon. Despite this, the party’s social media does not mention Trump, though it typically focuses on local candidates and visiting presidential candidates. The rule has been in place since at least 2013 but was amended in early 2022 to allow the state committee to exempt a candidate from the rule by majority vote.

Former U.N Ambassador Nikki Haley, who won all of Vermont’s delegates, suspended her campaign and endorsed Trump. The party’s rules dictate that delegates are not bound if a candidate withdraws or suspends their campaign. The Republican National Committee and the chair of the Vermont Republican Party did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the situation.

In response, the Democratic National Committee suggested that Vermont Republicans support President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. They pointed out that according to the Vermont GOP’s own rules, Trump is not even eligible to receive their support. The statement emphasized that Biden is the only candidate without a felony conviction and has a path to 270 electoral votes.
