Hon. Thomas S. Durkin: A Life of Justice and Community Dedication
Brattleboro, VT – Hon. Thomas S. Durkin, a cherished member of the Vermont legal community and loving family man, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024, at the age of 67. After a courageous battle with cancer, he was surrounded by family at the home he lovingly maintained for nearly four decades.
Born on April 29, 1957, in Brighton, MA, and raised in Marlboro, MA, Tom’s passion for southern Vermont blossomed during childhood ski trips to Hogback Mountain. He graduated from Marlboro College and obtained his law degree from Vermont Law School, dedicating his career to justice and environmental stewardship.
Starting his legal journey serving the people of southern Vermont, Tom built a trusted practice with a lifelong friend, cementing his commitment to community service through various volunteer roles. His legal acumen led to his appointment as a judge on Vermont’s Environmental Court, where he served for 20 years. Renowned for his fairness, thoughtful rulings, and mentorship, Tom significantly contributed to preserving Vermont’s natural beauty.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom was a devoted husband to his wife, Sue, whom he met skiing over 42 years ago. Together, they raised three children: Michael, Emily, and Caitlin, and shared countless joyful moments with their seven grandchildren.
A true Vermonter, Tom enjoyed gardening, hiking, skiing, and spending time on Cape Cod’s beaches. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering principles deeply touched everyone he met.
A celebration of Tom’s life will take place on December 14 at Saint Michael’s Church in Brattleboro, followed by a reception at Retreat Farm. The family requests donations to the Vermont Law and Graduate School or the Harris Hill Ski Jump, honoring his enduring legacy of community and justice. Tom leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and commitment to a better world, remembered fondly by family, friends, and colleagues alike.
