Vermont COVID-19 Update: Slight Rise in Cases, Emphasis on Vaccination

By Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine

The Vermont Department of Health (VDH) recently reported a modest increase in COVID-19 cases, rising to 67 from 51 the previous week. This uptick follows a decreasing trend observed in April and May, where cases fell as low as 31 in early May. During the same period, hospitalizations also ticked up slightly, but remain low overall, with around five hospital visits related to COVID statewide last week. One additional fatality was recorded, bringing the total pandemic death toll to 1,230.

The data, covering reports from November 17 to November 23, 2024, shows that while cases are on the rise, overall COVID-19 activity remains manageable. Notably, wastewater monitoring indicates low virus levels, and hospitalizations are below one per day.

Governor Phil Scott and VDH officials urge Vermonters to get vaccinated ahead of winter, highlighting that only approximately 9% of the population has received a booster dose, with higher rates in Addison and Chittenden counties. "I have been fairly religious about keeping up with my boosters," Governor Scott stated, emphasizing the importance of vaccination in combatting COVID-19.

Recent trends show that while Vermont has one of the lowest COVID-19 fatality rates in the US, vigilance is necessary, especially for vulnerable populations. Epidemiologist John Davy noted that current activity levels do not necessitate major changes in daily behavior, although individuals at higher risk are encouraged to stay updated on vaccinations and take precautions.

As COVID-19 continues to circulate, authorities stress the importance of vaccination as the primary method to build protection against severe illness, promoting ongoing health measures as winter approaches.
