Nine lake associations in Vermont are urging state officials to expand the ban on wake sports to 10 more lakes in the state. A new rule limiting the use of wake boats and wake sports to only 30 lakes was implemented earlier this year to protect shoreline ecosystems and non-motorized users. Advocates feel that the initial restrictions were not sufficient and are petitioning for the ban to be extended.
Meetings are set to take place in Newport and Montpelier to discuss the petitions filed for lakes such as Great and Little Averill Lakes, Echo Lake, Lake Parker, Shadow Lake, Lake Willoughby, Waterbury Reservoir, Lake Fairlee, Caspian Lake, and Joe’s Pond. The deadline for comments on the proposed ban extension is December 23.
The goal of the ban on wake sports is to prevent damage to the environment and disturbance of other recreational users on the affected lakes. The lake associations are hopeful that by expanding the ban, they can further protect the natural beauty of these water bodies and ensure that all users can enjoy them without interference.
