Updated: Dec 9, 2024

Kennebunk’s own Max Murray is making headlines as he and the Vermont soccer team prepare for the NCAA Final Four, also known as the College Cup, this weekend in Cary, North Carolina. The senior center back played a pivotal role in Vermont’s impressive upset over the second-ranked Pittsburgh, securing a place in the national semifinals.

With this victory, Murray has achieved an impressive seven NCAA tournament wins throughout his collegiate career. Reflecting on his journey, he recalls being recruited by Vermont with the promise of chasing national championships. Murray reminisced about the feelings of disbelief when he first realized the potential of their goal, especially after their initial NCAA tournament experience ended in a first-round exit against Villanova. "You think about, you know, I’m going to school in Vermont, not a Power Five conference, and you start to realize that we really are here to win national championships," he stated.

Murray’s soccer journey began at Kennebunk High School, where he played both his freshman and senior seasons, along with a stint at Seacoast United. Now, he’s looking forward to the challenge ahead as Vermont faces Denver in the semifinals on Friday. The team, which has captured attention as a significant underdog story in college soccer, is poised for a historic showing as they aim for the coveted championship title.

As excitement builds, Murray and his teammates are determined to make their mark in the College Cup, showcasing the talent and spirit of Vermont soccer on a national stage.
