Luigi Mangione, arrested for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, once belonged to a group of Ivy League gamers who played assassins in a game called “Among Us.” Alejandro Romero, a member of the group, was shocked by the news of Mangione’s arrest. Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, where a 3D-printed firearm and a handwritten document were found on him. Police say the document spoke to his motivation and mindset. In New York, he was charged with murder, possession of a firearm, possession of a forged instrument, and criminal possession of a weapon. In Pennsylvania, he was charged with carrying firearms without a license, forgery, and other offenses. Romero described Mangione as a typical college student who didn’t stand out. Mangione’s digital footprint includes reviewing the “Unabomber Manifesto” and becoming more active on social media in 2021 after a five-year silence. Romero and the Discord group members are struggling to understand how Mangione’s online persona and the murder charges are connected. The Mangione family expressed shock and devastation over the arrest and offered prayers for all involved.
