Ex-Chair of Jan. 6 Committee Responds to Trump’s Call for Panel Members to be Jailed

[ad_1]
Rep. Bennie Thompson, who previously chaired the House Jan. 6 committee, disagreed with President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that committee members should be imprisoned. Thompson stated that the committee did nothing illegal and that threatening its members with jail due to disagreement with their work is unjust. Fellow committee member Rep. Pete Aguilar agreed, emphasizing that they upheld the rule of law during their investigation.

Trump had accused Thompson, Cheney, and other committee members of deleting and destroying testimony without evidence, calling them “political thugs” who should go to prison. Cheney responded by condemning Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his incitement of the Capitol riot, calling his suggestions a threat to the rule of law.

The committee’s 18-month investigation concluded that Trump was responsible for the election overturn efforts that led to the Capitol attack. Additionally, Trump stated that he plans to pardon the supporters who participated in the attack, describing them as “hostages.”

Overall, Thompson and other committee members reject Trump’s calls for their imprisonment, emphasizing that they were simply carrying out their duties as members of Congress and upholding the rule of law. They view Trump’s suggestions as part of his ongoing assault on democracy and the foundations of the country.
