Agency Veteran Chosen by Trump to Lead ICE Will Be Ready to Start Deportation Efforts Immediately

[ad_1]
President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Caleb Vitello, a veteran of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to lead the agency in executing his mass deportation policy. With over 20 years of experience at ICE, Vitello is expected to quickly implement Trump’s deportation policies. Vitello’s appointment as “acting” director means he can start aggressive removal efforts without waiting for Senate confirmation. Many insiders at ICE have expressed relief that an experienced veteran like Vitello was chosen, describing him as a thoughtful and good leader.

ICE, with 20,000 agents in 400 offices, will be responsible for the entire removal process, including detaining immigrants in the country illegally, transporting them to staging areas in the Southern U.S., and overseeing deportation flights. Vitello oversaw the recent implementation of a body-worn camera policy for agents and has experience as a use-of-force instructor. In a 2018 court case involving an ICE agent accused of causing a detainee to fall and lose teeth, Vitello testified that the agent’s actions were “highly unusual” and not part of agency training.

Vitello’s expertise and experience at ICE make him well-suited to lead the agency in executing Trump’s deportation policies. His appointment as acting director allows him to immediately begin enforcement efforts without Senate confirmation. Many within ICE view Vitello’s appointment positively, as he is seen as a steady and experienced leader who understands the complexities and challenges of the immigration system.
