Vermont’s CISO John Toney Takes on Role as Visiting Fellow at George Mason University
Vermont Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) John Toney has accepted a position as a visiting fellow at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, where he will join the Cyber and Tech Security Council of the National Security Institute (NSI). This supplemental role will allow him to collaborate with top cybersecurity professionals and engage with the latest developments in cybersecurity policy and technology.
Toney, who was appointed CISO in April 2023, previously led the Philadelphia Electronic Crimes Task Force while serving with the U.S. Secret Service. He views the fellowship as an opportunity to expand his knowledge and develop strategies that will enhance Vermont’s cybersecurity posture. "It’s a way for me to give back, and also to learn from experts," he stated, highlighting the chance to gain insights from senior executives in cybersecurity.
While Toney noted the distinct differences between private and public sector cybersecurity challenges, he emphasized that budget constraints in the public sector often require innovative solutions and collaboration. He aims to leverage this experience to promote a more proactive security environment in Vermont, particularly as the state explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity.
Under his leadership, Vermont has already begun implementing AI tools for threat detection, though Toney is cautious about vendors’ claims regarding AI. He collaborates closely with Vermont’s Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer to ensure robust data security. Toney intends to utilize AI not only for threat detection but also to streamline processes like contract reviews, freeing up resources to focus on cybersecurity risks.
Toney’s dual role signifies a commitment to continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing in the fight against cyber threats in Vermont.
