Manhattan Jaspers Fall to Vermont Catamounts in Non-Conference Finale

BURLINGTON, VT – The Manhattan Jaspers women’s basketball team (6-3, 0-0 MAAC) suffered a defeat against the University of Vermont Catamounts (5-6, 0-0 America East), losing 74-57 Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gymnasium.

The game began with immediate scoring from Vermont’s Anna Olson, prompting a quick response from Manhattan as Leyla Ozturk connected with Petra Juric for an early basket. However, Vermont quickly surged ahead with an 8-0 run, forcing the Jaspers to regroup. Although Manhattan managed to narrow the gap through contributions from Brianna Davis and an eight-point total from Juric by the end of the first quarter, they still found themselves in a double-digit hole.

The second quarter saw Manhattan cut Vermont’s lead to six thanks to back-to-back shots from Hana Muhl and Kristina Juric. Nevertheless, they ended the half trailing by 15 points, marking their largest halftime deficit of the season. The Jaspers attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, with layups from Muhl and Gimenez Monserrat bringing the score closer.

Ines Gimenez Monserrat was the standout player for Manhattan, leading with 12 points and hitting five of her twelve attempts from the field, while also contributing four assists. The Jaspers managed to maintain a perfect free-throw record with 7-for-7 but struggled with overall shooting, finishing with a 41.1% field-goal percentage.

The defeat dropped Manhattan to 3-6 in non-conference finales under head coach Heather Vulin. The Jaspers will look to bounce back on Thursday, December 19, when they host Saint Peter’s in MAAC action at Draddy Gymnasium. The game is set for an 11 a.m. start and will be available for viewing on ESPN+ with a subscription.
