Vermont voters will head to the polls on November 5 to cast their ballots for a range of federal and state offices, including the president, a U.S. senator, the governor, and seats in the state Legislature. Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris will be on the ballot along with Republican former President Donald Trump and seven third-party candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who recently suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump.
In the U.S. Senate race, Bernie Sanders is running for a fourth term against five opponents, including Republican Gerald Malloy. Incumbent Phil Scott, a Republican, is seeking reelection as governor and faces Democrat Esther Charlestin and three other candidates.
Vermont has a history of voting for Democratic presidential candidates, with Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton winning the state by over 60% in previous elections. As of October, there were more than 505,000 registered voters in Vermont, and the state does not register residents by party.
In the upcoming election, all registered voters in Vermont will be sent an absentee ballot. In 2020, 76% of the vote was cast through absentee ballots, a number that dropped to 67% in the 2022 midterm elections. The state’s election votes are released at the town and city level, potentially slowing down the counting process.
The Associated Press does not make projections and will only declare a winner when it is certain there is no scenario for trailing candidates to catch up. The election is set to be a closely watched event, with key races for president, U.S. Senate, and governor.
