PITTSBURGH – In a stunning NCAA Quarterfinal matchup, the University of Vermont Catamounts defeated second-ranked Pittsburgh with a decisive 2-0 victory on Saturday evening, securing their spot in the 2024 College Cup in Cary, North Carolina.
Maximilian Kissel ignited the scoring in the 51st minute, putting Vermont ahead with a well-placed shot. Just as the match was winding down, Yaniv Bazini sealed the deal with an insurance goal with only 10 seconds remaining on the clock.
First-year goaltender Niklas Herceg showcased a stellar performance, recording his third shutout of the tournament. He made a career-high nine saves, ensuring that Pittsburgh remained scoreless throughout the match.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Vermont, making them the second program in America East history to qualify for the College Cup, following UMBC’s feat in 2014. The Catamounts also made history as the first team from New England to reach the tournament since Providence did in 2014.
