Vermont House Democrats Elect New Leadership Ahead of Upcoming Session
Montpelier, VT – In a significant shift as they prepare for the 2024 legislative session, Vermont House Democrats have elected new leadership. With the departure of several incumbents and the need for fresh voices, the party has embraced change by selecting Representative Jill Krowinski as House Speaker, replacing outgoing Speaker Molly Gray, who has taken on a new role as the state’s Lieutenant Governor.
Krowinski, whose leadership has been characterized by a collaborative approach, aims to unite the party and address pressing issues facing Vermonters, including housing, climate change, and healthcare. "I am ready to work alongside my colleagues to build a better future for all Vermonters," Krowinski stated during her acceptance speech. Her experience in the House, particularly in progressive policies, positions her well to tackle significant challenges in the coming months.
In addition to Krowinski, the Democratic caucus also appointed Representative Sarah Copeland Hanzas as the new Majority Leader. Hanzas, who is recognized for her commitment to social justice and community engagement, sees her role as critical in driving forward the Democrats’ agenda. Meanwhile, Representative Emilie Kornheiser was chosen as the new Assistant Majority Leader, further bolstering the party’s leadership team with her advocacy for education reform and equity.
The new leadership is poised to guide the Vermont House of Representatives through a pivotal session, as the Democrats seek to build on their previous successes while addressing ongoing issues exacerbated by economic pressures and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The election of this leadership team signals a proactive approach as they prepare to introduce legislation that reflects the values and needs of their constituents.
As the session approaches, all eyes will be on how this new leadership will shape policy and engage with both sides of the aisle in the Vermont legislature.
