BURLINGTON, VT — At a recent open house event, the University of Vermont (UVM) unveiled groundbreaking assistive technologies designed to enhance independent living for individuals, particularly older adults and those with disabilities. Attendees explored a simulated apartment outfitted with both low-tech and high-tech devices that aim to alleviate daily anxiety and promote autonomy.
Victoria Priganc, the program director for UVM’s newly launched occupational therapy program, emphasized the importance of independence, stating, “Most people prefer to stay in their homes as long as they can.” Among the standout devices were a smartphone-controlled oven, a remote locking system for doors, and a specialized “bed ladder” for those with limited trunk strength.
The highlight of the event was the Samsung smart fridge, which features a touchscreen panel capable of voice commands. This innovative appliance assists users in meal planning, grocery list management, and food organization while also providing an internal camera to check contents remotely—ideal for users who may struggle to open the door.
Another popular item was the “tornado dryer,” an air dryer built into bathtubs that activates with a button, facilitating post-bath drying without towels. The bathroom showcased other accessibility features, including a tub cut-out for easy entry and adjustable heated toilet seats designed to address sensory needs.
The range of devices presented varied significantly in price, from affordable options like the bed ladder to more advanced technology such as the smart fridge, priced at $2,399. Notably, the Vermont Assistive Technology Program offers trials of these devices for 30 days free, allowing potential users to evaluate their suitability before making a purchase decision.
This event, which highlighted the intersection of innovative technology and occupational therapy, reflects UVM’s commitment to improving quality of life through accessible solutions.
