EU-funded researchers have developed a groundbreaking technology to combat plastic pollution by repurposing recycled Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) to create laminated glass. The traditional challenges of recycling PVB due to leftover glass pieces have been overcome through advanced sorting systems developed under the SUNRISE project.

Using a multisensor tool, researchers can effectively sort through laminated glass waste, separating usable and unusable pieces. A specialized facility can then treat the glass, recycling 790 pounds of PVB per hour and potentially over 125,000 tons of PVB overall. This innovation not only reduces material costs but also contributes to reducing plastic pollution globally.

The prototype tool is being demonstrated in Spain, with the primary application being new interlayer films for laminated glass. However, researchers are also exploring other potential applications such as creating coatings, textiles, and components for energy storage devices like batteries using recycled PVB.

This discovery offers both economic and environmental benefits, showing promise in reducing plastic waste and finding sustainable uses for recycled materials.
